The National Education Awards Programme (NEAP), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, held the 3rd edition of its annual awards ceremony for the 2024–2025 cycle, reaffirming its commitment to promoting excellence, integrity, and continuity in Nigeria’s education sector.
The event highlighted NEAP’s mission as a deliberate intervention by concerned Nigerians to complement the efforts of government and the private sector toward motivating learning, encouraging reading culture, and strengthening educational standards nationwide.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Host, Hajiya Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education, Mrs. Nnenna Leo Agwoko described the awards as an important incentive that inspires students and educators to excel. She emphasized that the Ministry remains committed to supporting viable initiatives that align with its inclusive education goals. She urged stakeholders to cultivate a culture of continuity and deepen partnerships, assuring them of the Ministry’s readiness to provide support from all fronts.
The Chairman of the Planning Committee, Engr. Anselm Ijebor, reflected on the theme “Catch Them Young”, stressing the importance of guiding young people toward positive pathways in a society challenged by unemployment, irregular migration, cybercrime, and cultism. He noted that education remains the most reliable tool for addressing societal deficiencies and fostering a productive generation. Drawing comparisons with South Africa’s slogan “Free Education, Free Country,” he encouraged Nigerians to take education seriously and support programs that strengthen learners’ motivation, especially since teachers cannot shoulder the responsibility alone.
Chairman of the occasion, Otunba Biodun Ajibola, expressed deep appreciation for being entrusted with such a responsibility. He emphasized that massive investment in education and integrity-driven initiatives are key to national development, noting that government alone cannot shoulder the cost of quality education. Ajibola called for a renewed commitment to strong public–private partnerships, adding that “Examination integrity lies at the very heart of quality education.” He challenged stakeholders to reassess outdated ideologies and adopt more effective strategies that enhance trust in Nigeria’s education processes.
Delivering the keynote address, Engr. Onuoha Nnachi underscored the need for innovation, skills development, technological adaptation, and research-driven approaches in education. He encouraged the adoption of the “learn how to learn” philosophy, which empowers learners to think deeply, explore freely, and develop holistically. He further advocated allowing children to grow naturally while being guided with patience and insight.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of key education bodies, including Mr. Achebe Joseph (representing the Honourable Minister of State for Education), Mrs. Leo (representing the Director of Basic and Secondary Education), and Dr. Innocent Uche (representing the NECO Registrar).
The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to outstanding performers from NECO, WAEC, and BECE examinations. The overall best students honoured were Miss Adeyemi Emmanuella Ademila (NECO), Master Quribullah Olamilekan (WAEC), and Charles Bryan Uzoma (BECE).
The 3rd NEAP Awards Ceremony concluded with renewed optimism, as stakeholders pledged continued collaboration to sustain excellence, integrity, and innovation in Nigeria’s education sector.
