The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a powerful directive to all public sector unions, urging immediate and coordinated action over the lingering issue of unpaid wage award arrears owed to federal workers.
In a letter signed by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the Congress expressed growing concern over the federal government’s failure to fully settle the arrears, despite ongoing engagement by labour leaders. The letter, marked “URGENT,” was addressed to Presidents and General Secretaries of public sector unions nationwide.
“This serves as a kind but urgent reminder,” the letter reads, “concerning the unresolved issue of *Arrears of wage award for federal workers*,” urging union leaders to remain actively engaged and escalate actions if necessary.
Comrade Ajaero emphasized the need for a stronger collective response, warning that the movement stands at a critical juncture where unity and decisive action are essential. He called on all unions to submit progress updates by the end of May to guide the next steps.
“If the federal government fails to meet this demand,” Ajaero declared, “we must all work together to compel compliance.”
The NLC’s call signals a renewed push for accountability, with unions now expected to intensify pressure to ensure workers receive what they are owed. The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that past sacrifices by the labour movement will not be in vain.
The letter ends with a rallying appeal for solidarity: “We count on your usual commitment and passion in this struggle.
