The Federal Government has officially renamed Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) to Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs) to enhance technical and vocational education in Nigeria. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated that this move aligns with President Tinubu’s vision to reduce youth unemployment, create jobs, and foster a technologically driven society.
Announced during a stakeholders’ meeting on the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative in Abuja, the change aims to reposition TVET as a key driver of national development.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Nasir Gwarzo emphasized that this is more than a name change; it represents a significant shift in educational priorities to prepare students for the evolving workforce.
Dr. (Mrs.) Olodo M.A, Director of Technology and Science Education, raised concerns over low teacher participation in STEM and TVET training. She called for better coordination to ensure teacher development without disrupting student learning.
Mrs. Offokeansi I. S., Chairman of all Federal Technical Colleges and Principal of FTC Otukpo, urged principals to improve communication during student transitions, ensuring no JSS 3 student is denied admission due to overcrowding.
This strategic move is expected to equip Nigerian youth with industry-relevant skills, aligning education with the country’s economic needs.
Is good because technical colleges will surely improve the hands-on exercise and gives skills to the youth to their self reliable
All along mostly, the technical aspects creates and casts both things we uses, seen . Not limited to what we’re using in our daily lives. From kitchens, bathrooms, laboratories to industries, what we wear and even the weaponry
It is a good development in the right direction,this will create employment for the youth if properly implemented.
1) All our present JS3 should be admitted to Technical section.
2) Creation of proper awareness of the importance of technical education in national development.
3) Supply of regular electricity to FSTC’s.
4) Training and retraining of teachers.
5) Compulsory use of the existing machine machines on FSTC’s.
6) Supply of machines relevant to craft.
7) Give each section of each department a challenge to be productive.
8) Employment of young technical teachers..etc
Nigerian as a Nation needs to revolunise her education sector to convert most of the National University to polytechnic as that was case in China.
Dichotomy between BSc and HND will forever exist. Poor 9ja ma country.😥

There is no corruption in China.So, don’t be copying things that you find and implement well.
Hmmm. Nigerian leaders. Will this changing of names bring the improvements in the educational sector. The question is why changing the names instead of founding the educational sector in Nigeria? After all they send their children abroad for studies. God save us from those old leaders of this country.

All we need in the nation is action not words. Therefore, govt shd emback the technical college curriculum with practical learning entirely not theoritical teaching.
This is awesome. The nation’s education focus after basic education is ‘technical level’ education, mass education of young students across all fields based on their interest and passion, before proceeding for further studies in poly/uni.
Nigeria would have gained the necessary skilled technicians to drive production as there are already many solutions from our researchers that have not been brought to life for lack skilled manpower.

This is a most welcome development; it arrives at an opportune moment. However the concern extends beyond simply renaming institution without substantive actions. The fundamental issue resides in providing the necessary need for the technology Education for contemporary training to meet societal needs, such as equipping the workforce with modern training, tools and equipment. I also uphold the view that this gesture should be extended not only to lower level, but the territory education level, converting more Universities courses into polytechnics courses which prioritize practical rather than just theory.
The problem is not with renaming. If rename without addressing the root cause of the bankruptcy of skills from the lecturers, it’s as good as doing nothing.
It is a good policy if it is well implemented and there is no policy somersault .Apart from this , technical and vocational education education should be made more attractive by providing incentives such as better pay /allowances for the products and removing the long standing parity between the products and University graduates.

This is indeed a good move. However,serious meaningful steps should be taken to close the gaps between the senior secondary school phase and the technical education phase in these schools. Modifications of their syllabus will be necessary especiallyin English and mathematics. They are not to come out and be recognised as Artisans only but as potential students for tertiary education too. Our polytechnics should be able to take them in as students (those willing.) NABTEB to be better structured &upgraded. God bless Nigeria

This is a needless policy, Summersault. The idea of technical education in Nigeria is to produce craftsmen, and FSTC, like all other federal government colleges, are elitist schools. They can produce a contented middle-class workforce. No parents would allow their child who aced SSCE with straight As to take a vocational craftsperson or technician when he could be an engineer, scientist, tech innovator, or entrepreneur anywhere on the globe. Think again.
I graduated from FGC Ilorin in 1995 with about 240 others. Almost all of us are medical consultants, engineers, lawyers, academics and other professionals worldwide today. None of us failed to proceed to earn a university degree within less than a decade of leaving school.
We were selected from very competitive National Common Entrance Exams, and almost all went on to graduate with excellent results. We could learn vocational and technical crafts as a pastime but hardly as a career.
Changing the name doesn’t matter but funding, equipment, materials and management matters. The leaders should stop taking kickback and allow professionals do their work.

Ministry of education should send qualified trained teachers to the schools to teach the students right . Also create bodies to suppervise both teachers & students. Unity schools that was perfect place for learning have loose it’s test do to mismanagement. Thereby private schools become the best option schools to train students!
It shouldn’t be all about renaming Federal Science and Technology unity schools to Federal Technology only. Ministry of education should send qualified trained teachers to the schools to teach the students right . Also creat bodies to suppervise both teachers & students.Also provide good amenities for conducive learning…Unity schools that was perfect place for learning have fai due to mismanagement. Thereby private schools become the best option schools to train students!
Moreso,the science subjects that took many students to unity schools, should not die ,by not sending qualified teachers to them.
