At least 100 pupils have been tested for cholera in a Kaduna primary school following a reported outbreak in the neighbourhood.
The pupils from Bilyaminu Street Primary school in Igabi LGA in Kaduna State had shown some signs of the cholera disease.
A Councilor of Rigasa Ward, Auwal Ahmed, has fumigated the school as part of efforts to contain the possibility of spreading in the area.
Speaking to journalists, Ahmed said there was fear that some pupils had developed symptoms after which they had mingled with their school mates.
According to him, following the report, his office quickly mobilized a team of health personnel where all the pupils were tested and over 100 have shown signs of the disease while 45 others were treated.
“Following the report, we immediately swung to action because the school is one of the largest LEA primary school in the area in terms of population. There was fear in the minds of the community because the disease may spread due to the large population of the pupils”.
“We were successful in combating the outbreak, we discovered over 100 children with symptoms of the disease”.
“However, only a few of them became severely ill, and we took them to the hospital where they were treated and discharged,” Ahmed said.
Ahmed further said to avert future occurrence, the whole school environment has been fumigated and personal hygiene facilities will be provided in the school.
